10 Ways to Write Better Title Tags

January 9th, 2007 View Comments

Yesterday, I wrote about how to write title tags.

Today I want to offer a top 10 list of tips and examples of title tags that work.

1. The Numbered Title

Numbers in a title tend to draw the eye toward it if not overdone.

  • 16 ways to better physical fitness
  • 10 Ways to Write Better Title Tags

2. The Questioning Title

Asking questions is a great way to get attention. It makes the reader subconsciously want to answer the question.

  • Used cookbooks – Why were they better?
  • When should you submit your website to search engines?

3. The Testimonial Title

Use this to focus on results and therefore attract the reader.

  • Our Memory Flash Cards improve your memory by 200%
  • Shopping Search Software rated #1 by CEO of Shopping.com

4. The Commanding Title

Use these to portray an element or essence of authority.

  • Need to book a European Vacation? Do it now!
  • Stop! Don’t renew your mortgage until you read this!

5. The How-To Title.

Many readers like to learn “how-to”. Offer this to grab attention.

  • How to buy cheaper gas
  • How to get a job at Google

6. The Discount title

Use savings or benefits to stand out from other sites.

  • Buy electrical testing equipment at 20% off retail!
  • Rent foreign movies – 7 movies for 7 days at one low price.

7. The Indirect Title

An alternative angle that is slightly indirect compels some.

  • Buy New England Patriot Tickets and get a free secret bonus.
  • Want GPS for your car? Read our free Whitewater first.

8. The Guarantee Title

Everyone loves a guarantee. Especially if your competitors don’t offer one.

  • Asheville business consulting services: Positive results or your money back.
  • Asheville dentist offers no pain or your money back!

9. The Benefit Title

Announce specific benefits that distinguish you from your competition.

  • Sylvania 6119TE 19″ Television – Now With Free Shipping!
  • Affordable Pressure Washers – See all prices on one screen.

10. The “Reason Why” type of Title

An element of reasoning adds intrigue to a title.

  • 14 reasons why people click on my links instead of yours.
  • Leather Horse Saddles – What you need to know before buying.

SPECIAL NOTE: As you can tell from the above examples, you can often use more than one method in a title tag. This makes it even better.

DISCLOSURE: Although I added many of my own examples and comments, much of the above came from a similar article written by John Alexander (author of Wordtracker Magic). Special thanks to him.
