SEMCLT Association – The Inside Scoop

SEMCLTWhat is SEMCLT? It is the Search Engine Marketing Association of Charlotte.

Should you care? If you are in the Charlotte area and are involved in any way (or want to be) with search engine marketing or any online marketing of any sort, you should care.

Why? Because this association is not just some crazy idea that someone thought up and threw up a website.

It all started on May 23, 2007 when Keith Schilling started a little meetup group on the website meetup.com.  Roy Morejon, Fred Sexton, and David Kyle all joined him over the next few months and started holding regular meetings to talk about search engines and online marketing.  I joined them in October.

Since then, that little Charlotte SEO Meetup group has been holding monthly meetings on various online marketing topics.  Now, (less than two years later), there are 319 members and our meetings are attended by 50 to 100 people every month.

The meetings are so popular that we now need to start charging a little money in order to afford a larger location.  So Keith turned it into SEMCLT and is now going to be charging an annual membership fee.

Part of the inside scoop is that the five of us didn’t really make this association, it made itself.  We’re just trying to keep up with the demand for online marketing training and information.

What will happen to the Charlotte SEO Meetup?

We are keeping it alive on Meetup.com and will hold regular meetings every few months or so.  These will generally be beginner level.  The meatier meetings will be for members only at www.SEMCLT.com.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW…

Here is the urgent part… Keith has told me that as of March 1, the price for membership will go up to $125 per year.  But as of right now, you can signup and become a member for $50.  This gets you into all the events, access to the live stream, and access to all previous events that have been recorded.  It may get you a link from the members directory.  (Keith, leave a message below to confirm or deny this.)

In fact, Keith told me over instant message today that members that join now will be flagged as “charter members”, which is pretty cool.

I’m not trying to make money here.  This is for real.

I would hate for any of my readers to miss this opportunity.

As a matter of fact, as of right now all the money is going into the renting of the room for our events.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS?

I think you will like the founders and the other members of this group.  (The five founders have been typically grabbing dinner before our meetups.  It’s great.)  Now that we have a bigger location, we’ll probably all just network before and after the meetings.

WHAT I’M DOING

What about me?  Keith has asked me to work on getting good topics and speakers for the upcoming events.  I have some really cool ideas.  I think I can get some very informative and enjoyable sessions in the next few months and into the future.

So please don’t miss this opportunity.  You can learn more and become a charter member at www.SEMCLT.com.

PS:  Don’t let the site fool you.  It’s not quite done yet.  There will be a lot more information on it soon.

  • Haha. I appreciate your enthusiasm, Ty! But I have a lot of respect for Brett Tabke and PubCon. I don't think we'll get quite that big. It is exciting what we are doing through.
  • Corey, way to go bud! That is a wonderful Idea. As I have been telling you...Charlotte PubCon!!
  • Eric, I've heard a few people locally mention the SC SEO Meetup. Congrats on getting that started. I hope it goes well for you.
  • Jon Payne I agree with you. Spending 50 bucks to pick everyone's brains is worth every penny.

I'm glad that they plan to have 2 separate groups.
One for beginners, and one for advanced.
  • Thanks Guys! I'm a newbie in the Charlotte area, but have been doing SEO full-time since 2003. I'm running a Fort Mill SEO Meet-up, which helps me network in the Fort Mill area and meet people in the industry. But, The SEMCLT is where I can learn and collaborate with the people in the trenches doing this day in and day out.

    Thanks or making this possible!
  • Thanks for all the hard work. I look forward to the meetings each month. I like this arrangement and will support it.
  • I'm excited about this. "beginner SEO" meetings with 100 people are not of interest to me. I'd rather have deeper discussion with 30-40 people who are in the trenches on a day-to-day basis.

We did something similar with the Baltimore SEO Meetup - I had 200 members within like the first few months and we put up an approval process. Our attendance was lower but the quality of the meetups was better. That is the bar for success IMO. You guys have done something similar by splitting up the group here... but you did it one better. Maybe two better.

I don't care if there are 100 members or 1,000 members. I care about how many solid, valuable connections I make. I'd rather have 10 of those from 100 total members than have 5 solid connections in a room of 500 people.
  • Sounds like a great idea, looking forward to the discussions going forward. Met a couple of the individuals mentioned, including Fred and you, Corey, at the PRSA luncheon this week. For those wavering on whether this is worth it or "for real," I can say that this is a very talented and forward thinking group. Kudos for realizing that 300+ SEO minds work better than one.
  • Thanks guys.
  • You hit the nail on the head. Yes we will be adding a directory very soon. I plan on getting the form up and running before the next meeting so everyone can fill it out. From there I'll start to build out the members profiles within the next few weeks. Keep your fingers crossed :)

We really want this to be about "The Members". Without them we're nothing. We're holding an 'open social' in the next few months that will be a large networking opportunity for everyone involved in Charlotte. We'll open our doors and let everyone join us!

Please spread the word and we look forward to growing this group!
  • As the only Association in Charlotte exclusively dedicated to Search Engine Marketing, I am extremely fortunate to be a founding member of this panel, and work with such an amazing group of talented Internet Marketers. Looking forward to our official kick-off Thursday - Join us!
  • I'm excited about this next meetup because of the great topic of E-Commerce but maybe even more so with having more room for members. I think the capacity of the last place was 30 and I believe we had 66 at the most popular meetup (twitter).
Some of the members of this meetup really know their stuff when it comes to search engine marketing. This next meetup is a can't miss for those seeking excellent education about the latest in making money online.
  • I'm in!

Hoping you guys can come up with a local logo like SEMPO

The hippo & mouse ontop of the planet with roy should be interesting.
  • I forgot to mention that if you have any questions, please contact me and/or leave them below. I'll do my best to answer them quickly so you can take advantage of the current price. I'm hoping the other four founders will drop some comments also.
