More on “Generation V”

August 4th, 2008

Gen VIt seems as if PC World had an interesting article on Generation V back in November of 2007.  So, in actuality, Gartner Inc had started using the phrase almost a year ago now.

Back then, they had gone so far as to say that there are unique ways to prepare to market to this Generation V (which stands for Generation Virtual).

Back then, they recommended…

1. Organizing products and services around multiple online personas.

2.  Selling to the persona not the person

3. Creating virtual environments as a way to orchestrate customer exploration toward purchases

4.  Shifting investments from known customers to unknown ones.

5.  Developing and retaining new employee skills to attract, connect, contribute and gain insight from generation V and their virtual environments.

In other words…

Try to figure out what type of person would be your ideal client or customer and determine exactly what they would be like (persona).

Then, focus your budget toward build virtual environments for them.

Lastly, hire and work toward connecting, contributing, and learning from the people that fall within this persona.

It’s brilliant, really.

Yet, in a sense it is very much the opposite of what many marketing agencies are currently doing.  They run surveys to determine who their current clients are and try to interrupt them in their daily life so that they will buy from them.

Is the Internet changing marketing?  It’s starting to.

All of this is getting me very excited for my trip next week to attend the New Media Expo!
