Corey Creed of Hippo Internet Marketing gives a full explanation of how to make money online via e-commerce. This was the topic of my Charlotte BarCamp session on January 24, 2009. Since then, I’ve given it some more thought and flushed out the topic a bit more.
Here are some additional show notes…
- This is the link to the Charlotte BarCamp
- To find products, I mentioned Shopping.com
- For providers, you can check Yahoo Stores, ProStores, Mountain Media, JanMedia, Network Solutions Ecommerce, Volusion, or Magento.

Corey,
Nice job on the podcast. It was very informative. I think anyone who is seeking to provide ecommerce should really get a good idea on what they need to do as far as researching their options.
You laid out quite a few options that should enable people to start their business plan.
I would like to mention from a design stand point, it’s important for the ecommerce owners to critically analyse their website as if grandma was shopping. Can she navigate the site easily? How many clicks does it take her to get to purchase their items? How secure is her shopping experience?
As many ecommerce owners will attest, it takes a lot of trial and error to achieve maximum performance on an ecommerce website. It’s vital to communicate efficiently to your designer the needs and goals of your business. Finding a designer that cares about your bottom line is a hard task, but they are out there. At http://www.BarnettWebsites.com we take pride in our work as if your online store was our own website. If you don’t look good neither do we.

Very true. I did not talk much about navigation and usability. But those definitely lend themselves toward users liking and trusting you. Thanks.

Just got done listening to this podcast- alot of fantastic information. Another potential pitfall I have found is finding a manufacturer that would love someone to sell their products but ends up being either clueless as far as working with ecommerce or taking forever to fill orders. That could be very discouraging to a person new to ecommerce. We sometimes try to run a test order to see how well they do in filling orders/communicating, etc. so that we don’t waste tons of time putting up a bunch of their products on the site only to find out they’re really a pain to deal with. Any other ideas as far as checking out potential suppliers/manufacturers before adding their items to an ecommerce site?

Nice point. I just recently read an article in “The Net Effect” on how to check out a potential manufacturer to work with. We’ve had good success with any we have worked with. But I should probably look into this more. I’ll let you know if I learn anything else on the subject.
